Sean Payton on ESPN’s “Mike and Mike”

Posted by NewOrleansSaints.com on 02/06/2013 – 3:13 pm

New Orleans Saints Head Coach Sean Payton appeared on ESPN’s “Mike and Mike” Wednesday morning. Listen to the full interview here. Below are some payton_radiohighlights from the interview:

How he will be different this season after missing last season: “You take into account a lot of different aspects of our game. Prior to stepping away, (Bill) Parcells and I had this conversation about looking at your team differently and really the league. You are able to watch a lot more TV copies of game tapes. I received the coaches tapes on Tuesday so I was still able to stay in touch with the schemes, whether there are trends in the pistol offense or some of these other things. More importantly than that, you gain an appreciation for how special the job is that you have.

“The one thing that surprised me (that) I didn’t expect, is that it wasn’t the football, the Sundays and the competition that you missed as much the relationships that go along with it. The difficult thing is (there are) so many of our closest friends, our peers and people that we are used to talking to on a regular basis – Mickey Loomis, Joe Vitt, the players – then all of a sudden it’s quiet for eight months. That was the most challenging thing. The thing I appreciate most (about) coming back is the relationships. I think that is the same for any of us that end up leaving the game. I think that buzz in the locker room and the camaraderie.”

On what his first order of business was when he got back: “It was the second day of the Senior Bowl and I had a chance to catch up to speed with the staff. We had to make some tough decisions in regards to our defense. The very first thing that happens after the season is over with is your own evaluation of your own team. You are trying to properly grade where they are at as you make decisions going forward. We are going to be like so many teams and are going to have to make some tough salary cap related decisions.”

On where he stands in the process of hiring a new defensive coordinator: “We are going to bring in two to three candidates. I think we will know in a week. Much has been reported about Rob Ryan and he is going to come in and interview at the end of this week. We will have at least two to four candidates. One of the challenges in our league is trying to get even position coaches from other teams, you have to get permission from the other team. Just because it’s a promotion, it’s not a given that they would grant that permission. There are a couple of those requests out there to other teams in regards to position coaches that we would have interest in interviewing as a coordinator. I think within a week we will have a firm decision on that .”
