Gleason Hosts the “Steve Gleason Golf Classic” in Idaho

Posted by NewOrleansSaints.com on 06/26/2012 – 4:51 pm

Former Saints safety Steve Gleason hosted the “Steve Gleason Golf Classic” on Monday at the Golf Club at Black Rock up above Lake Coeur d’Alene.

The event raised more $250,000 for a variety of charities including Gleason’s “Team Gleason.”

John Blanchette of The Spokesman-Review wrote about the event and Gleason’s fight against Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).

Blanchette says of Gleason “Once a foot soldier who helped change, for a slice of history, the face of football at Washington State University. After that, he was a cult figure in his adopted home of New Orleans, both for some kamikaze football heroics and a lifestyle that connected him with the community in ways few athletes ever are. Barely had he taken off his football uniform than he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis – ALS – and made his affliction not just public but prominent, because that’s what could do the most good.”

Q&A with TE Jimmy Graham

Posted by NewOrleansSaints.com on 06/22/2012 – 9:30 pm

Saints Pro Bowl TE Jimmy Graham spoke with NFL Network’s Lindsay Rhodes and Jamie Dukes after he was named No. 14 on “The Top 100: Players of 2012.”

Below are some nuggets from the interview. You can watch the full interview here

On being the top tight end on NFL Network’s “Top 100: Players of 2012”…

“I was honored because it was my peers who voted for this. I know there are going to be debates with me versus Gronk (Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski).”

On earning so many accolades after being a third-round draft pick…

“It’s been a long process. It’s been a lot of hard work. One of the craziest things is that I am so young. I am still learning. Every day in OTAs and mini-camp practices I am taking another strive forward. To be playing the game for two and a half years now, I still feel like there is a lot of room or me to grow.”

On where he can improve…

“No. 1 for me is blocking. Sometimes with the sets and schemes we have I am not doing it as much but last year in the beginning I was blocking a lot more. I know that it is something that will help me get open. If I can block and protect Drew (Brees), defenses are going to have to respect that where they can’t always double cover me.”

On how QB Drew Brees has helped him improve…

“Drew is like an older brother to me. He has really taken me under his wing. The thing about him is that he is so hard on me. Every time I make a mistake he is the first one telling me what to do but it’s tough love. He is always constructive with his criticism. He has been one of the main parts of me growing so quickly.”

Pro Football Focus Says OT Zach Strief is the Sants’ “Secret Superstar”

Posted by NewOrleansSaints.com on 06/18/2012 – 3:25 pm

Pro Football Focus listed OT Zach Strief as the Saints’ “Secret Superstar” for the 2012 season.

Strief successfully moved into the starting role at right tackle for the Saints in 2011. The seven-year veteran used his tremendous size and strength to his advantage on an offensive line that was part of a unit that amassed an NFL-record 7,474 total net yards and allowed only 24 sacks, tied for the second-lowest total in the NFL

Pro Football Focus Writer Sam Monson said Strief “has earned himself the starting job with his performances in the past, and earned the right to keep it with his performances in 2011. If he can continue that level of play through sixteen games in 2012, we will be talking about Zach Strief as a potential Pro Bowl candidate by the end of the season”
